Piola proudly presents Carlos Marchand’s "Kiosks from Rio"- a series of photographs taken fifteen years ago along the shorelines of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The food, the drinks, the hang-loose no-restrictions mood and colors of the Kiosks being warmth to New York City at Piola. The exhibition will open on January 15, 2008 and will run through March 3, 2008.
The party has already started!
Brazil has one of the longest shorelines on the planet with a rich variety of habitats and expressions of culture. KIOSKSFROMRIO frames this diversity of mobile bars/small trailers/snack bars where people at the beach gather. Every Kiosks has to find a way of establishing a particular space and must create a special identity to attract loyal customers.
“Each Kiosk must have something special to offer, it could be their cooking, their drinks or maybe the music. However, what stands out in KIOSKSFROMRIO are the paintings with their unique character and vibrant colors. Like a detached icon on the horizon, every Kiosk is personalized with its own artwork. Creative images make each Kiosk distinct giving them a special place in Rio. It was pure intuition to photograph them that time, shooting early mornings to be sure to get all of them closed with the facades. Absolutely Pop Art!
Unfortunately, kiosks of such type no longer exist and have been replaced by new ones, standardized and modernized.”
