Piola Restaurant proudly presents "Juxtapositions", a new series of paintings by artist Donna Lomangino. The exhibition runs from July 20 th until September 4t, 2010.
Juxtapositions features representations of well-known historical figures—but there is a twist: within each portrait, one contemporary detail highlights something about the historical personality as it throws our own pop culture obsessions into sharp relief.
Napoleon is shown sullenly playing War Games on his PS3. How else would stylish Marie Antoinette accessorize but with a Chanel bag (Oh, Marie!)? It seems only natural for Chopin to tune out the world with his iPod (iChopin)—and we all know what the unfortunate Ms. Boleyn demanded from King Henry (hint: it rhymes with bling).
Lomangino’s CinemaScope oil series were painted from film frames. The larger-than life, panoramic faces speak to our fascination with movies, television and the media, which inject color and drama into our day to day existence.
Donna Lomangino is the creative director and owner of Lomangino Studio Inc., a DC-area design communications company. She also founded Throwplace.com, a reuse and recycling site dedicated to philanthropic and environmental endeavors, where users may list excess items they wish to give away. Gaining recognition as a painter, Lomangino plans to continue exhibiting in solo and group shows in the DC area and beyond.
