Mathew Merrett

Mathew Merrett

Mathew Merrett started photographing the world around him, more than 20 years ago. His approach to a subject has always been that of creating art through the lens, by finding a unique angle or approach to things that we see everyday. He purchased his first digital camera in the year 2000 and never looked back. The digital medium allowed him to control the entire process, right to the final print. This resulted in more successful images and a greater passion to shoot.
That passion erupted from the moment he stepped into his first abandoned warehouse. He knew he was in a special place. A place so still, yet full of life, and a place that could be subject to change at any moment. Mathew has spent several years exploring, photographing and exposing this “urban decay”. Now frozen in time, subject to the elements and neglect, he captures what was once abundant, before the redevelopment cycle erases them, forever. He researches and documents many abandoned sites, from institutions and industrial sites, to commercial abandonments and mines. Many of these places have since been demolished or redeveloped, yet new locations open up, offering a constantly evolving subject matter. While entering many of these locations have their inherent dangers, from questionable air quality, unsound structure, to unexpected visitors, Mathew carefully weighs the risk to reward, while using appropriate survival gear, from a respirator and steel toed boots to gloves and a flashlight. His camera gear consists of a digital SLR, a number of quality lenses, and a sturdy tripod.
“The entire premise behind my photography is to bring an unusual perspective and awareness to things that most people wouldn’t give a second glance to. Exposing the obscure and resurrecting life where it once existed is my photographic passion. By carefully visualizing my surroundings as they once were and are today, past and present are captured as one.” In my photography, I capture light and form in a state of decay, which can be found in unusual places!”Born and based in Toronto, Canada, Mathew’s background in fine art painting and graphic design, provided him with the design principles that he applies in his images today.
